Making the Switch: How to Transition Your Dog to Nourra

A Better Bowl Starts With a Smooth Transition

You’ve picked your Nourra recipe, the bag has arrived, and your dog is already investigating what’s inside. We know it’s tempting to fill the bowl and let them dive right in—but when introducing a new food, a little patience can go a long way.

Even when your dog loves their new food, their digestive system may need some time to adjust. That’s why we recommend gradually transitioning to Nourra rather than changing their entire diet overnight.

Here’s how to make the switch.

The Nourra 7-Day Transition:

For most dogs, we recommend transitioning gradually over approximately 7 days.

Days 1–2: 25% Nourra + 75% current food

Days 3–4: 50% Nourra + 50% current food

Days 5–6: 75% Nourra + 25% current food

Day 7: 100% Nourra

Every dog is an individual. Some may transition easily, while dogs with more sensitive stomachs may benefit from making the change more slowly.

Pay attention to your dog throughout the transition. If their digestive system seems to need a little more time, stay at the current ratio for another day or two before increasing the amount of Nourra.

There’s no prize for finishing the transition first. The goal is a happy dog and a happy belly.

We Recommend Feeding Twice a Day

Once your dog is fully transitioned, we recommend dividing their daily amount of Nourra into two meals per day.

For example, if your dog’s recommended daily portion is two cups, you would typically offer approximately one cup in the morning and one cup in the evening.

Your dog’s individual needs may vary based on factors such as age, weight, activity level, body condition, and lifestyle, so use the feeding guidelines on your Nourra package as a starting point and adjust appropriately for your individual dog.

And don’t forget about treats! Treats and other extras contribute to your dog’s total daily calorie intake, too.

Nourra Doesn’t Have to Be the Whole Bowl

Want to introduce Nourra without completely replacing your dog’s current food?

You can do that, too. 

Nourra can be incorporated as a mixer or topper, giving you another way to add Nourra to your dog’s existing routine.

You might choose a Nourra + current food combination that works for your household and continue feeding them together rather than progressing all the way to 100% Nourra.

Mixed feeding can also be a convenient option for multi-dog households, picky eaters, or pet parents who simply prefer incorporating more than one food into their dog’s routine.

Using Nourra as a Mixer

When using Nourra as a mixer, remember that it isn’t simply an “extra” on top of your dog’s normal portion.

Nourra adds calories to the bowl.

Rather than feeding your dog’s usual full serving and then adding Nourra on top, account for both foods when determining the total amount you’re feeding each day. Because foods can have very different calorie densities, a cup-for-cup substitution isn’t always equivalent. Checking the calories per cup of both foods can help you determine appropriate portions.

The goal is to create one daily feeding plan, not accidentally turn dinner into dinner plus a second dinner.

What About Switching Between Nourra Recipes?

Once your dog has successfully transitioned to Nourra and you know they tolerate the recipes you’re offering, you may choose to incorporate different Nourra formulas into their routine.

As always, individual dogs are different. If your dog has a history of digestive sensitivity, food reactions, or a health condition that requires a specific diet, talk with your veterinarian before making significant changes to their feeding routine.

Watch the Dog in Front of You

Feeding charts are helpful—but your dog should always be part of the equation.

Monitor their body condition, appetite, energy, stool quality, and overall response to their new diet. Their needs can also change over time as their age, weight, and activity level change.
