Freeze-Dried, Dehydrated & Gently Baked: What’s the Difference?
Walk through the pet food aisle today and you’ll see terms like freeze-dried, dehydrated, air-dried, baked, and gently baked everywhere.
But what do they actually mean?
At Nourra, transparency isn’t just about telling you what’s in a product. It’s also about helping you understand how that product is made.
Here’s a simple look at three methods you’ll find across the Nourra family.
Freeze-Dried Treats
Freeze-drying is a preservation method that begins by freezing the food. Under a vacuum, much of the frozen water is then removed through a process called sublimation, where ice transitions directly into vapor.
The result is a lightweight, shelf-stable product with the flavor and texture dogs tend to find incredibly appealing.
Freeze-dried treats are especially convenient for training, enrichment, topping meals, or simply giving your dog a high-value reward.
Because very little moisture remains, proper storage is still important. Keep freeze-dried products sealed and follow the storage directions provided on the package.
Dehydrated Treats
Dehydration uses controlled heat and airflow to gradually remove moisture from food.
It’s one of the oldest methods of food preservation, and its simplicity is part of what makes it so useful for dog treats.
Removing moisture creates a more shelf-stable product while often producing the chewy or crunchy textures dogs love.
Depending on the ingredient, size, and dehydration process, the finished texture can vary significantly—which means dehydrated treats can offer dogs a completely different experience from freeze-dried ones.
Gently Baked Food
Gently baked dog food takes a different approach because we’re creating a complete meal rather than simply preserving a treat.
Ingredients are combined and cooked using carefully controlled conditions to produce a convenient, nutrient-dense food with an appealing texture and flavor.
But here’s something important: “gently baked” doesn’t mean “never heated.”
We believe pet parents deserve accurate language rather than buzzwords. Cooking is part of the process. What matters is how a food is formulated, how it’s produced, the quality and purpose of its ingredients, and whether the finished diet provides the nutrition your dog needs.
So, Which Is Best?
There isn’t one processing method that’s automatically “best” for every product or every dog.
That’s why we don’t believe pet nutrition needs to become a competition between labels.
Freeze-drying can make an excellent treat. Dehydration can create another fantastic type of treat. Gentle baking can be an effective way to produce an everyday food.
The better question is:
Does this product make sense for my dog and what I’m using it for?
Treats are treats. Meals have a different nutritional responsibility. And every dog has individual needs based on factors such as age, size, activity level, health, and lifestyle.
Transparency Beyond the Ingredient Panel
We want you to turn over a bag of Nourra and actually understand what you’re looking at.
What’s in it?
Why is it there?
How was it made?
How should I feed it?
Those are reasonable questions—and pet food companies should be willing to answer them.
Because transparency shouldn’t stop at the ingredient list.
It should be part of everything we do.
Know what you’re feeding. Understand why you’re feeding it. Nourish their aura.
